The Program Area is located offshore Alaska in the Chukchi Sea Planning Area. The Chukchi Sea Planning Area extends from the 3-nautical mile (kilometer) limit of State of Alaska waters, northward from approximately latitude 68° 30′ N to latitude 75° N, and from longitude ° W (roughly north of the village of Barrow) on the east to. Geography. Herald Shoal is approximately 50 meters deep in most places. The shoal diverts warm water flowing northward from the Bering Sea and holds colder water long into the summer season, which allows sea ice to persist in this area longer. Herald Shoal is no longer covered by continuous pack ice, but along with Hanna Shoal, has some of the most reliable ice present on the entire Chukchi . The Chukchi Sea forms part of the Arctic Ocean, bordered in the east by northwestern Alaska between the Seward Peninsula and Barrow, and the west by Wrangel Island and northeastern Siberia. Estimates of oil and gas reserves on the US portion of the Continental Shelf, including both the Chukchi and the neighboring Beaufort Sea, range up to 30 billion barrels of oil.

Undiscovered Oil and Gas Resources, Alaska Federal Offshore, as of January This page monograph with 5 folded plates provides the fundamental data that support the most recent oil and gas assessment of offshore Alaska.

The report contains descriptions of computer models, geologic data for offshore basins, and economic models.

Abstract CHIRP subbottom data collected across the Chukchi shelf, offshore NW Alaska, imaged numerous paleochannels and valleys that appear to have been downcut and incised during sea level falls associated with glacial intervals.

In contrast, the two most recent incisions appear to have been formed during the period of sea level rise following the Last Glacial Maximum. the Barrow arch planning area, and these revised sections constitute the present report. Additional revisions will be made when seismic data gathered inand processed in late and earlyare interpreted.

These revisions will be incorporated in a more complete report on the geology of the Chukchi Sea that is now in by: 3. The main geological features of the Chukchi Shelf are the Hope Basin and the. Chukchi/Beaufort margin, the impact of glaciations on this continental margin, and the histrory of sea ice and oceanic environments under changing climatic conditions.

Recommendations from the workshop emphasize exploring new scientific problems that could be solved by means of ocean drilling, coordinating research planning and activities. United States. The canyon's shelf portion underlies and is maintained by the Alaska Coastal Current (A.C.C.), which flows northeastward along the coast toward the northeast corner of the broad Chukchi Sea.

FINAL REPORT Submitted by LGL Alaska Research Associates, Inc. East 76th Avenue, Suite B Anchorage, Alaska Prepared For 28 February Two bathymetric maps were developed by the U.S. Geological Survey, one for the Chukchi Sea and Arctic Ocean, and one for the Aleutian Trench and Bering Sea.

The 2 maps overlap near the Bering Strait. Bathymetric contours were generated from several published sources. It is unclear whether new soundings were collected for these maps. The northern map extends from.

Outcomes of this scoping process are a scoping summary (this report), a digital geologic map, and a and Noatak National Preserve) including the geologic setting, the plan for providing a digital geologic map, a list of geologic resource management issues, a description of significant geologic and the Chukchi Sea.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) conduct polar bear research in Alaska. A long term mark-recapture study in the Southern Beaufort Sea is underway to determine population size, productivity, and how polar bears are responding to their changing environment.
